Post Jam Update #1
So this game was made as an entry to the Vylocity 2022 Game Jam, and it turns out we won! ๐๐คฏ
Now that the review period is over, we can update our games, and there are a few things I'd love to do for this game before I consider calling it done.
Here are some of the changes you can try as of now, and then I'll follow those up with talking about some of the upcoming/planned changes.
Please Don't Scribble Me v1.0.1 Changelog
- Added local player client side positioning
- There's now no easily perceivable input lag for your player's position while online
- Reduced amount of obstacles near buildings that made it easy for enemies to get stuck
- Increased the region in which paths increase entity speed so it's easier to keep their movement buff
- Made it so bot players move a little more randomly, helping to haphazardly navigate around walls
- Made it so bot players will slowly make their way towards the player or bot with the crown from anywhere on the map
- Made it so bot players will intentionally pick up nearby power ups
- Added decorative tile flooring in and around some buildings
- These give a very minor speed buff as well over normal tiles
- Added a distinguishably unique tile below power up spawn points that are in buildings
- Tweaked which power ups are available in the center building so they're less predictable and OP
- There's now random potion power up spawns, so you might get a health or a speed in certain places
- Added outlier buildings near the center building that are close but not visible to each other
- Fixed bug where the crown would stay on your character for a moment after respawning
- Made it so no one can be crowned king unless they have a score of at least 10
- Fixed bug where players could get stuck scaled up until they took damage after a respawn
- Fixed bug where players retained their speed potion buff on respawn
- Fixed bug where pressing and holding space allowed players to spam attacks too quickly
Planned Changes and Improvements
As promised, here are some bullet points on what I hope to accomplish in an upcoming update or two. No promises here, but this is what I have currently on my Trello board to do.
- Add a title screen and pause menu
- Include a button for credits
- Include controls to toggle mute and adjust volume for music and SFX
- Include links to my twitter and discord server
- Include instructions on controls/how to play
- Update the scoreboard in game
- Bold or otherwise clearly note the player's own score in the list
- Improve the aesthetic for how the scoreboard looks
- Prevent players from being able to spawn super close to each other or enemies
- Encourage bots not to spawn super far away from players
- Give the player who deals a final blow to a player or bot player their wearable power ups
- i.e. if player 1 KOs player 2 and player 2 has a sword and shield, player 1 should get those
- Encourage bot players and enemies to change directions if they are bumping into the same thing for a long time
- Allow some bots to start with some power ups already active if they aren't near other players
- Add fancy scribbly animations for when a player dies showing them getting scribbled!
Oh and lastly, forgot to mention, there is a new thumbnail/banner thingy-ma-bob for the game!
